Kariega couple hopes to inspire with new book

- Roslyn Baatjies

What started out as social media posts about goals in 2018 has since evolved into ideas and now a book titled Goalposts.

The book, by Gerald Pietersen, 41, of Kariega (previously Uitenhage), was launched at the Agape Coffee Shop on Sunday.

Pietersen started writing in 2019 and it took him about six months to complete Goalposts.

“The book is about the various opportunities and challenges I and everyone experience in achieving our goals, as well as the continued journey to achieving the goal,” he said.

“I know I have greatness in me, but I struggled a lot to realise it.

“So, by penning Goalposts, I realised I had the opportunity to work through my mind, heart and soul to establish greatness.

“With this book, I want to send out a message that there is significant reward when you create significance outside of yourself.”

Themes he writes about include “every dream has a price tag”, “the journey to your goal is sometimes long and intense” and “be intentional about your pursuits”.

Pietersen said the book was

a dream of many years that had come to fruition.

“I feel incredibly accomplished.

“My dream will now be used to liberate many people,” he said.

“Once you receive that, you have a desire to grow your capacity.”

The business consultant from Van Riebeeck Hoogte said the book was the start of a bigger initiative.

“This is the first project for the Goalpost Foundation, which will assist children with study skills and bursaries.

“My wife, Sheri-Ann, and I are now working on a workbook that will be released at the same time as the foundation is launched in July, and then we’ll take it from there.

“From August 2021, I plan to have meet-up’s at the Agape Coffee Shop to ‘navigate’ with those who bought the workbook through their journey.”

The couple is also actively involved in youth development.

“I always believe one has to do the work before the establishment of anything.

“So, as individuals, we’ve already done seminars, workshops, team-building events, sponsorships and so forth,” Pietersen said.

“This has been for the last few years.

“Sheri and I are passionate about youth development and I dreamt about this for over 20 years.

“In business, I’ve realised that progress requires structure.”

He said the concept behind the foundation was to establish a platform for growth in Kariega.

“With the foundation, we would like to add tutoring, using our friends from Gqeberha.

“Sheri is a counselling psychologist and will offer study skills.

“I will do workplace readiness. We want to fund our first bursary by next year.”
