ANC has much to learn about how to run municipalities

- Sherwin Schreiber, Gqeberha

Our esteemed premier, Oscar Mabuyane, has vowed that the ANC will take back Nelson Mandela Bay come October 27.

They’ve done it before, only to drive the metro deeper into an abyss of looting, no service delivery, irregular tenders and a city drowning in filth.

As soon as the DA attempts to right the wrongs, the ANC and their political allies are quick to want to stage a quasi coup to wrest back power.

Should this occur, the good that has been done by their adversaries is undone, unravelled and the looting and non service continues.

What the ANC does not comprehend is that councillors are actually supposed to work for the citizens of the metro.

Councillors’ salaries (highly inflated) are paid by honest ratepayers. They are therefore our employees.

I have reached a stage with my limited political knowledge where I honestly could not care who runs the metro, provided it is done correctly, honestly and, most importantly, having the interest of the citizens at heart.

I, like so many, have become extremely disillusioned with the politics of the metro, with this continuous infighting, that one can only wonder if one’s vote is worth the inconvenience of standing in a queue to make one’s mark.

The omniscient ANC has a lot to learn about the running and management of a municipality.

This is evident throughout the country in ANC-led municipalities.

They are sadly lacking in the expertise to do it successfully.

In the short period the DA has been back running the metro, changes are so visible.

Water leaks are being attended to, road lines have been repainted, verges are being mowed — to mention but a few.

It will take time to wade through the backlog and chaos created by the mismanagement that came via the ANC during their and their allies’ tenure.

The ANC could definitely learn a thing or two by taking a leaf from the DA’s book if they intend taking back Nelson Mandela Bay.
