EPA kick off track and field season at Oval

Eastern Province Athletics will kick-start their 2021/2022 track and field season at the Westbourne Oval on Saturday.

EPA will be hoping their athletes continue their good form.

With the country under strict regulation­s and restrictio­ns due to Covid-19, sports events and activities were put on hold.

Yet, EP were still able to hold a successful season and 62 athletes participat­ed at the ASA Sub-Youth and Junior Championsh­ips in Paarl earlier in 2021.

With the financial support of the Nelson Mandela Bay municipali­ty, the junior athletes returned home with 11 medals — one gold, nine silvers and one bronze.

After the ASA Championsh­ips, Bay sprint and hurdles coach Jessi Kahn and two local athletes, Mondray Barnard and Ryan Jordan, were selected to represent SA in Kenya for the U20 World Junior Championsh­ips in Nairobi in August.

Jordan competed in the 4x400m relay men and mixed relay heats while Mondray took part in the 110m hurdle heats, reaching the semifinals and finishing in ninth position overall.

The ASA Championsh­ips medal winners were:

Christel van Vuuren — gold — hammer throw — G15 (distance 48.39); Mondray Barnard — silver — 110mH — M19 (Time 13.61); Wernich van Rensburg — silver — 400mH

— B17 (Time 52.69); Anke Serfontein — silver — 800m — G17 (Time 4.44.51); Reze Coetzer — silver — hammer throw

— G17 (distance 56.41); Ryan Jordan — silver — 400m — M19 (time 47.01); Tiaan Erskine — silver — hammer throw

— M19 (time 60.98); Bryce Putzier — silver — pole vault

— B17 (hight 4.30); Emma Kruse — silver — 800m — G17 (time 2.10.81); Marzanno Seekoei — silver — long jump

— B15 (distance 6.60); Bryan Katoo — bronze — 200m — B15 — (time 23.05)
