Please end lockdown now

- “PS”, Gqeberha

Dear President Ramaphosa, the 1918 pandemic lasted for two years. But this virus is still out there, the H1N1 mutated version.

The virus took far more people in 1918 than this Covid pandemic has taken.

We need to open up before the country collapses due to going unemployment and crime, which has been excessively polarised during this lockdown.

You stated at the beginning of this lockdown in March 2020 we needed to go into lockdown to prepare the hospitals around the country.

They have sadly not been really prepared to cope with the pandemic even as we are more than a year into the pandemic.

So why are we still in lockdown? Life must go on, we the people need to learn to find ways to cope with this virus.

It’s here to stay, it’s not going away.

The rollout of the vaccine is going to take years.

Why are you still keeping us in lockdown?

What are we being prepared for now?

The hospitals will have to learn to cope with the ongoing waves that will continue to come.

We the people can only continue to wear masks in public and stand apart from each other in public, keep 2m apart from each other in public spaces.

We need to work around the virus. Lockdown does not stop it from spreading.

Please open up our country totally.

Let us become responsible for our protection ourselves from the virus.

We need to work and grow our lives.

Let’s open up and stay open.

There really is no need to keep us in lockdown.

People are savvy these days, we have access to all kinds of info.

Let us make our own decisions now. Stop trying to restrict us.

Please open up our country and let South Africa shine once again.

From a tired lockdown generation.
