What does Heritage Day mean to you ?

Heritage is all about being proud of our roots and where we come from as well as our diversity. I’m coloured, Malay, South African. It’s like a breyani mix. Alles word in gegooi.

What do you enjoy most about Heritage Day?

I enjoy the display of culture and tradition. It’s an opportunity we get each year to pause and reflect on where we come from as well as enjoy the richness and diversity of those around us.

How do you celebrate Heritage Day in your family and at the restaurant?

If we are at work we all dress up in traditional attire or even in another person’s cultural wear. That’s so much fun and we learn more about each other. At home, it’ sa braai or potjie for sure.

What family traditions do you like to keep alive?

Definitely the South Boulevard Cafe Koeksister Sundays — there’s no way my morning can pass without a koeksister on a Sunday. And then there’s Sunday lunch that must include curry and dessert. Then one I pass down to my kids is sharing cookies with neighbours during Ramadan.

What message would you send to the Nelson Mandela Bay community to encourage them to embrace and be proud of our country’s rich heritage and culture?

For our community to take pride in our friendly city. Take time to visit all the historic sites in the city. Then stand in the PE wind and feel your face being forced to smile in these strong winds.
