Every day can be a braai day if you make it one

- Riddi Mistry RIEBEEK COLLEGE GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL, GRADE 8

Every year on September 24, we celebrate Heritage Day to honour the cultural wealth of our nation. South Africans praise the day by recollecting the social legacy of the many societies that make up the number of inhabitants in SA.

Living heritage assumes a fundamental part in advancing social variety, compromise, social attachment, monetary turn of events and harmony. This day celebrates South Africans’ roots, their rich, vibrant and diverse cultures. SA is called the Rainbow Nation due to its colour and diversity, and this is why Heritage Day exists.

The day is usually celebrated by having a braai. Heritage Day braais have evolved as an indigenous culture along with its delicacies like gourmet versions of boerewors and braai broodjies. Braaiing is such a part of South African culture that there are braai festivals, braai competitions and TV shows about braaiing: The Ultimate Braai Master.

Braais connect family and friends in different ways, be it over tall stories around the fire or as they indulge in the delicious food together! “Braai” is basically the gathering around a fire, enjoying good food, good company and celebrating your culture and heritage with loved ones.

SA is one of the world’s 10 most culturally diverse countries. The relative diversity of a country is determined by a number of elements and high-level concerns, including ethnic variety immigration, number of spoken languages, religious beliefs, politics, freedom, LGBT rights and personal freedom.

SA has eight World Heritage sites where visitors can go and enjoy the history of the country.

Suid-Afrikaners is snaakse mense. Wanneer ons depresief voel, braai ons. Wanneer ons niks het om te doen nie, dan braai ons. Elke dag kan ’n

braaidag wees as jy dit een maak. (South Africans are strange people. When we feel down, we braai. When we have nothing to do, we braai. Every day can be a braai day if you make it one.)

Heritage Day is vital to both the nation as a whole and its people and for this reason it continues to be recognised, commemorated and celebrated.
