PLASTICS POLLUTION CRISIS

Dr Tony Ribbink’s In My View column (“Drive to find home-grown solutions to plastics crisis”) of May 12 refers. Hopefully, the upcoming conference on marine waste to be held in Nelson Mandela Bay later this month will reveal what has happened to the billions of rand raked in from the sale of plastic bags. The money was meant to support recycling. Has it?

LETTER HAD A POINT

It seems Stephanie, in Friday’s Chirps, completely missed the point Francois Le Roux was making in his letter last week (“Down with celebrity trivia: We have much bigger problems“, May 9). Had she even read it to the end? LM

MANDELA STATUE A WASTE

I read in previous issues of The Herald of

plans to build a 27m Tower of Light in St George’s Park to honour Nelson Mandela. This in an era that considers statues out of fashion, and only fit for defacement or destruction. It is an insult to the millions of South Africans who are struggling to put bread on the table or rebuilding their lives from the flood disaster. What a waste of money. Most of our population does not have the time or energy to think of “inner peace and success”. Please put the money to better use.

BAY WATER CRISIS

We are all aware of our water shortages, but when reports are made of leakages (some quite major), it takes forever to get fixed. Hundreds of litres go to waste. Some leaks are constantly being repaired. Are the products or tools used old or faulty, or are people incapable of doing their jobs? Mrs D Appollis
