Grey High celebrate special occasion in style

-

Grey High celebrated a special occasion in style with a hard-fought 28-13 win over a gritty Queen’s College side in their schools rugby clash on Saturday.

Not only was it the school’s reunion weekend, it was also the moment when the Philip field became the Kolisi field in honour of Springbok rugby captain Siya Kolisi, who left Grey in 2009.

The home team were quick to seize their opportunities with an early try by No 8 Tristan van Aardt and a second by wing Luvuyo Nkomphela, who showed his brilliant footwork when he weaved his way past the Queen’s defence to score next to the posts.

Scrumhalf Daylon Myners was in good form with the boot and a conversion and penalty made it 15-3 at the break, with Queen’s fullback Lesego Bota slotting a penalty.

It was a significant cushion for the home side and as they forced Queen’s into errors, Myners slotted two more penalties to take the lead out to 21-6. Bota had earlier added a second penalty for the visitors

With seven minutes to go, Grey surged into the Queen’s

22m area and skipper and hooker Ivan Ingram showed great determination to force his way over for a maul to vir

tually settle the result at 28-6.

However, Queen’s never gave up the fight and hooker Uviwe Sontundu powered his

way over from close range, and Bota added the penalty to make it 28-13.

With time running out, though, the visitors could make no further headway and Grey ended up with a well-deserved win.

In Makhanda, Framesby might have thought it was going to be a walk in the park when they scored a try after just three minutes, but they would not have been more wrong.

In the end, it took very hard work to beat Kingswood 15-3 on Saturday.

It was captain Juan Baard, one of the stars for the winning side, who scored that first try.

That was to be the only try in the first half, with flyhalf Logan Muller adding the conversion and a penalty for the Gqeberha visitors. Kingswood answered with a penalty by Lethu Gwarube.

Framesby were leading 10-3 at the break and found it even more difficult to score points in the second half against some tenacious defence.

Both sides defended solidly throughout the match and put in some big tackles.

Quite a few of those were penalised.

With both sides defending like that, it was difficult to create scoring opportunities.

The only points in the second half came from a try by Jaco Pretorius that closed the deal for Framesby.

Graeme College returned home from Graaff-Reinet satisfied after seeing off a tough challenge from Volkskool, eventually winning 27-15.

With the home team always playing hard and being rewarded for that, Graeme made some mistakes and were not at their best.

However, they managed to get the job done and took an important 10-0 lead into the second half after crossing for two tries.

Volkskool enjoyed a much more productive second half and put 15 points on the board, but Graeme countered with three further tries to maintain the lead they had set up.

Graeme’s points came through tries by Kenneth Magau (2), Khanyiso Kopo, Abongile Golela and Hlombe Kepe. Lagon Oerson added a conversion.
