Grey Junior pupils honing maths and tech skills

At Grey Junior, the teachers have for many years emphasised the 21st century skills in all the subjects taught.

With the Ed Tech initiative at Grey Junior, the boys can use their iPads to develop these skills.

Maths and natural science are two of the subjects where thinking skills are encouraged.

The boys’ skills were tested in two competitio­ns — the Horizon Mathematic­s Competitio­n and the Eskom Expo.

● Horizon Mathematic­s competitio­n:

A total of 39,600 pupils participat­ed in this competitio­n and Grey Junior did exceptiona­lly well, winning the Best Performing School in the competitio­n as well as the Top Participat­ing School.

Twenty pupils were placed in the top 30 in this competitio­n.

The following were placed in the top 10:

1 Shuaib Simons (won a laptop)

2 Mathew Erasmus (tablet) 4 Jarrod le Roux (smartphone)

5 Aiden Douglass (smartphone)

6 Holden Jerling (bicycle) 7 Micah Wessels (bicycle) 9 Nathan Appels (scientific calculator)

10 Cian Ferguson (scientific calculator)

A further 12 boys were placed in the 11th to 28th positions.

● Science Expo regional results:

This year, the pupils entered on the Eskom Expo portal — 72 Grey boys entered and the project level was of a very high standard.

Results:

34 gold medals.

The best pupils were as follows:

Cameron Rist, Tearyn Wyngaard, Ethan Walters, Tristan Rudman, Caster Olivier, Dylan Clark, Matthew Kingwell, Alexander Dorfling, Muhammed Niazi, Logan Reider and Carl Killian.

In addition to best in category, Alexander Dorfling won the best energy project and Logan Reider’s project won him the best innovation project.
