TAXI INDUSTRY SCRUTINY Taxi troubles or SA troubles? Taxis offer a service, yes, but there’s no issue of tickets for revenue for Sars. However, taxi operators do qualify for fuel levy benefits. Daily cash earnings are never disclosed. Other public transport options run by government are targeted and burnt when operating in certain areas.

GIVE SOUTH AFRICANS TRUTH We in SA are fast becoming gullible followers. The ruling party is inundating us with versions of what they perceive as truth. A German commander in World War 2 summed it up aptly. He believed that if you spread a lie continuously, you start believing it yourself. Listening to pronouncements made by ANC leaders and those in government underline this. What they do not realise is that you can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all the time. Some have become habitual liars. We need to inculcate the value of honesty in every sphere of life. The truth will set us free.

PARK A PLEASURE TO VISIT I was privileged to spend a day in the Addo Elephant National Park earlier this month. It was an absolute pleasure, this first-time experience in this specific park. The staff are professional but friendly at the same time. The ablution facilities are clean and well kept, and I can say the same about the picnic spots we used. Big thumbs up to SANParks for the free entry [during National Parks Week], their well-mannered staff, and Hansie and Penny Willemse who made the day possible. We’re all quick to criticise when things are wrong, but tend to forget to give praise when it’s deserved.

CYRIL RUSHES HOME — AGAIN Correct me if I’m wrong, but has Cyril Ramaphosa not had to rush home before because of an Eskom crisis in his absence? There have certainly been occasions when he was out of the country that heightened electricity outages occurred. Makes one think! Why does he have to rush home? Why can’t his elusive deputy handle matters? Do you recall the aloof Thabo Mbeki responding to questions about government failure way back then by saying that no heads would roll; it was a “collective decision of government”? Well, it still is. The attempts to repair Eskom remind me of the clown who tries to catch the balloon, but then keeps kicking it away from himself.

BBBEE APPOINTMENTS Re Pro PE’s recent Chirp about BBBEE appointments, Volkswagen most probably keep their “Germans”, as you call them, in place to oversee that their structures don’t go down the drain like everything else. If you had put that much money into a factory, you would also put people in charge whom you could trust to look after your investments. L McLeod
