Learn from experts in water management
All over Nelson Mandela Bay there are reports of uncontrolled spills and broken infrastructure, including in the Baakens River valley.
It is a disaster! But, there is hope, besides getting some order back into running the city.
I read in Jewish Report online last week that Israeli experts are going to be helping the city of Tshwane — and possibly Johannesburg — with the management of waste water.
Israel is a world leader in this field, reclaiming 95% of its waste water to near drinking standard.
This water is then used for agricultural purposes.
It won’t be the first time we’ve been helped by Israel.
Recently they helped to rehabilitate a dam near Mahikeng that animals could again drink from — something which has not been possible for years.
Now if we could just get those folk here for a quick visit!
We would, of course, rope in the researcher from Nelson Mandela University, who recently wrote an interesting opinion piece in The Herald mentioning our water and sanitation challenges.
Compared to what has been achieved in the Negev desert in Israel, our problems are small change.
Interestingly, control of water and sanitation in Israel was never left to municipalities to manage, so incompetently run towns such as Cradock, for instance, would not be able to upset a project like the Fish/Nooitgedacht water scheme with uncontrolled sewage leakage.
Do go to YouTube to see what all has been done in a country that is really short of water, especially in the Negev.
