Thrills and spills at Scribante Raceway
The early morning rain on Saturday did nothing to detract from the action that kept an enthusiastic crowd entertained at Aldo Scribante Raceway.
With a large contingent of drivers and riders making the trip down from East London to compete in round 7 of the Regional Championship, it ensured that many of the class championships were still left wide open.
The premier class of the day was no doubt the Modified Saloons where 23 cars across 6 classes set out to do battle on the 2.4km circuit.
Celso Scribante in his Lamborghini Huracán was the man to beat and came under immense pressure from Shaun Gradwell in his powerful BMW in the first heat.
Gradwell, unfortunately, ran into clutch problems in heat 2 and had to withdraw for the rest of the day, leaving Gerhard Oosthuysen with the task of chasing down the dominant Scribante Lamborghini.
In the very competitive class D, teammates Steven Phillips and Ryan Visagie set the pace with lots of wheel-to-wheel racing, with Visagie ultimately coming out victorious and he now finds himself having to move up to class C due to the impressive lap times that he set.
In class X for newcomers, it was 17-year-old Kenzo Barnard who showed that his skills learnt on the karting and oval tracks around the country would stand him in good stead as he scooped the coveted driver of the day award after having posted some very quick lap times in his VW Golf MK1.
In the open motorcycle class, East London’s Travis Naude put in a masterful performance keeping the very quick Jamie Hall and Oliver McKay at bay.
Dylan Grobler’s great season continued with him winning both the NSF 100 and CBR 150 classes in a dominant fashion.
