Paroled Jeremy Mopp dies after stabbing in nightclub
A parolee, who spent time behind bars for his role in the murder of a Bay couple 12 years ago, became the victim of a fatal stabbing at a Bethelsdorp nightclub at the weekend.
Jeremy Mopp, 38, died on his way to hospital after being stabbed near the dance floor of the popular La Dee Das nightclub in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Mopp was recently released on parole after serving a lengthy prison sentence for his involvement in the abduction, robbery and murder of Owen Demingo and Sarah-Jane Oliphant in January 2011.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said officers responded to a complaint at the Livingstone Hospital at about 1.20am on Saturday morning.
Mopp died from several stab wounds to the head and neck.
“It is alleged the victim was rushed to hospital after being stabbed at a nightclub in Bethelsdorp.
“A case of murder was opened and circumstances around the incident are still under investigation,” Janse van Rensburg said.
La Dee Das owner Annestachia Russouw confirmed the stabbing had taken place at her establishment.
They were co-operating with the police investigation.
“We have footage of the incident and events leading up to the stabbing which we have shared with the police,” Russouw said.
In a statement released by the establishment yesterday, it said: “The incident, like many others happening daily in our society, was out of our control and attended to efficiently and effectively ...”
“All events will continue despite the rumours. Security will be further beefed up.”
Community activist Christian Martin voiced his concerns on behalf of the community.
“I have been in contact with Bethelsdorp SAPS.
“We have called for the club to be the closed pending the investigation. There have been several concerns about the establishment, and we wish for the police to do a thorough investigation,” Martin said.
Mopp, along with Andrico “Boeta” Williams and Junaid “Pang” van Vught, were sentenced to life in prison after they murdered Demingo, 22, and Oliphant, 31, and dumped their bodies along Marine Drive in 2011.
The couple were kidnapped at the Bloemendal Community Centre in the early hours of the morning of January 29 2011, and stuffed into the boot of Demingo’s car.
They were robbed and taken to an ATM where money was withdrawn from their accounts, before they were executed.
Cyclists found their bodies at about 5.30am the same day, about eight kilometres apart along Marine Drive.
A private investigator close to the case alleged Mopp had turned state witness in a police investigation in exchange for a reduced sentence, securing his parole and subsequent release from prison a few months ago.
