Grey take control in big cricket win over Selborne

-

Grey High registered an emphatic victory over traditional rivals Selborne College when they met in their annual schools cricket fixture in East London at the weekend.

This clash is always played with a different level of intensity as both schools are highly competitive in all aspects.

However, this time Grey took control after losing their first two wickets when the Selborne spinners were introduced into the attack.

The openers saw off the new ball to lay a good platform for their team and then in-form batsmen Xander Elkington and Kian Cambier took control as they put on over 180 runs for the third wicket, with Cambier notching his second century in three weeks.

He was finally dismissed for a run-a-ball 132 and Elkington contributed an excellent 75.

Tuen Kloppenburg, who arrived at Grey from The Hague in the Netherlands this year, scored his first half-century for the team, recording a blistering 59 not out off 29 balls, with several huge sixes.

This enabled the Grey side to declare their innings on 343/6.

Selborne got off to the worst possible start as they found themselves 12/3, with the top three batsmen all failing to score.

From that position, the hosts never threatened the large total, with the Grey spin attack proving too difficult to attack.

Selborne were eventually bowled out for 146, with Elkington capping off another fine all-round performance by picking up four wickets.

Other notable achievements for Grey from the weekend were Jesse Tustin-Parker’s 110 not out for the U14B side, along with Hluma Vezile’s haul of 6/22 in the same game.

Sam Bellignan fell just shy of a century for the U15B side, being dismissed for 91, and Matthew Marshbank had a solid all-round day with a knock of 50 and 5/12 for the U14A team.
