THE START OF HILTON’S VERY OWN MARKET

- JADE LE ROUX

Born out of a desire to promote and support local artisans and small businesses, especially during Covid-19, the Quarry Centre has started a quarterly market where locals can shop and sell their products.

“The Quarry Centre has been a part of the Hilton community for at least three decades. It is an oasis in the middle of a growing town and the idea for the We Heart Hilton Market came about to allow locals to utilise the space to promote their home-made, hand-made artisanal products, arts and crafts as well as create an al fresco community event for everyone in the family to enjoy,” said Nikki Downs, who runs the market for the The Quarry owners.

She said there is an abundance of talent, but a shortage of opportunity for locals to showcase their products.

“Covid-19 has also seen many local businesses struggle to stay afloat. As a result, many people have turned to their passion to generate extra income. Many entrepreneurs also rely on markets for their income and as a result of the pandemic have been cut off from any exposure. Covid-19 has also created an awareness among people to support local and buy local, and the We Heart Hilton Market is an opportunity to do just that,” she explained.

From arts and crafts, to homemade food, condiments, plants and gardening accessories, the We Heart Hilton market aims to support as many local industries as possible.

The market will take place quarterly, but this may move to monthly as it grows. Stalls will be set up along the grassy patches around the centre. Stretch tents will be used to cater for Hilton’s unpredictable weather. Covid-19 protocols will be strictly adhered to. The market itself constitutes an outdoor event.

“We are also planning a lovely food court area at the back of the Centre where we will have tables and chairs overlooking the breathtaking view of the quarry,” said Downs.

The main requirement for stall holders is to be a local business, operating from Hilton or the Midlands area. It costs R200 for a 2m x 2m stand.

Exhibitors can email hello@ wehearthiltonmarket.co.za with details about their products and/ or links to social media profiles. Follow We Heart Hilton Market on Facebook and Instagram for more information.

The first market will kick off on Saturday March 27 from 8am to 3pm.
