Avumile Mcunu received eight distinctions and was awarded the IEB Commendable Achievement.
“I didn’t set out to achieve distinctions; I just wanted to be well prepared for my finals. I feel very fortunate that online learning enabled us to continue with our syllabus without much hassle,” he said.
Mcunu enjoyed spending the time at home and having the support of his family during the stressful times. He also expressed appreciation for his science teacher whom he approached for help towards finals.
Hlumelo Notshe Hilton College’s 2020 Scholar of the year won nine distinctions, and came in the top 1% in Economics, English Home Language, History, Information Technology, IsisZulu First Additional Language, Life Orientation, Maths and Physical Sciences.
Notshe was “quite stunned” by his results. “My initial response was shock, and then gratitude to my parents for the privilege they afforded me to attend Hilton College, and their emotional support.” He has been accepted to Stanford University (USA), but is undecided on whether to study abroad or in SA. He has also been accepted at UCT, Stellenbosch, Wits, and University of Pretoria.
