Dundee all set for second carnival

- ARTHI GOPI

IF YOU hear loud bangs coming from Dundee, it’s not a battle re-enactment from decades gone by. The loud bangs will most likely be from drums being played and the noise will be from kids having fun.

The Dundee Battlefields Carnival rolls into the northern KwaZulu-Natal town for its second outing after the first one last year.

The executive director of the carnival, Ido Lekota, said they were busy putting the finishing touches on the carnival and said there would be something for everyone.

The carnival will be held at the Royal Country Inn on September 23 and 24, and offers everything from music to books, food and dance.

It is hosted by DOZ Holdings and tickets are available from Computicket.

“On the first night, the event features a long table dinner under the sky in the main street of Dundee,” said Lekota. Entertainment during dinner will be provided by Marcia, who is an Afro-Soul solo artist.

Dinner will be followed by an indoor jazz performance by pianist Afrika Mkhize and bassist Thuto, said Lekota.

The second day is more festive, with a street parade by various cultural groups and street performers and various exhibitions and stalls.

Lekota said Dundee was selected as a host city because of its historical significance and tourist attraction as part of the Battlefields Route, which includes the historical sites of the battles of Isandlwana, Blood River and Rorke’s Drift.
