Delight in Durban inspires an album

- SITHEMBILE MKHWANAZI

DURBAN-based Palm Tree Paradise is the latest group to make waves on the local hip hop scene with their fresh Unbelievable single recently screened on MTV Base.

The collective was formed this year and is six artists, Luyanda “JayBee” Mthethwa, 20; Sanele “Sydrow” Ngwane, 21; Phumlani “PDogg Amazing” Xhakaza, 26; Mthobisi “Axsion” Nkosi, 23; Siyanda “Row Shotgun” Ngwane, 24; Sifiso “Captain Hook” Zondi, 25.

The name came about when they realised how the different palm trees around Durban’s beach came together and added to the beautiful scenery, just like the combination of their six talents.

“Most of us lived in the same neighbourhood, and went to the same schools,” said Mthethwa.

“It was our love for music that brought us together and made our bond stronger.

“Row produced the first song we recorded and it has shown our growth since we used to make music as a hobby. We had no intention of starting a group or even recording an album, but after we went into studio and the magic was produced, we had no choice but to let the music guide us.”

They released the first single from their album two weeks ago on iTunes, GooglePlay and other platforms.

Like the group, Unbelievable “was inspired by the beautiful city of Durban”.

From the beach locations to where they grew up, “we wanted to capture all the beautiful things of South Africa.

“It’s a song for the dreamers, which means keep smiling because nothing is impossible,” said Xhakaza.

The video was shown on MTV Base earlier this month and has gained new fans nationwide.

“From family members calling when they saw us on TV, to friends who believe they’ve got a celebrity friend… and the new fans.

“The love we are getting, it’s all just ‘unbelievable’. With the help of Aewon Wolf and Skystar productions we’ve managed to portray the city of Durban as it’s never been seen before” said Mthethwa.

The Palm Tree Paradise Art Experiment album will be released early next year.

They perform today from 11am at Rivertown Beerhall at the Trade Show, tickets are R40.
