- STAFF REPORTER

THE FIRST Great Big South African Indian Comedy Show will be taking place at Suncoast today, featuring a host of rookie and veteran comedians presenting stand-up comedy, sketch comedy, music and dance.

The comedians include former Miss India Globe 2010, Keru Kisten, alongside Sans Moonsamy, Maeshni Naicker and entertainment group the Dingalings.

“With all the stresses of daily living, it will be the best remedy – that I can guarantee” said comedian Muthu Murugan.

The show will also feature South African stand-up veterans Afzal Khan, Muthu and Sagie Murugan, Neville Pillay, Karou Charou and Bala & Peru (Vikash Mathura and Ray Maharaj).

“The event brings together the cream of Indian comics,” says Karou Charou. “Never before have these comics all shared the same stage, so it’s going to be an event of epic proportions for lovers of Indian comedy.”

Being relatively new to the comedy stage, as “only” a sixyear veteran, Charou is very excited to be sharing the stage “with such comedy legends as Muthu Murugan and the ‘uncles’”.

“Especially since they have retired and are ageing drastically, staring death in the face… so yeah, I’m glad for this opportunity that may never come again,” he said with a cheeky grin.

Mathura, who plays the character of Uncle Bala, said he is very excited to do another show in Durban.

“When we announced our retirement, it was for radio and not entertainment.”

Although he has been in the industry since 1997, Mathura says there is still always something new to learn. “To see new talent coming in is always exciting – everyone brings a skill.”

Mathura described his relationship with his co-performer Maharaj as
