BEFORE SPLASHY FEN SPLASHED OUT

-

The ever-popular Splashy Fen Music Festival will be back in the Underberg hills over the Easter weekend, the first festival having been held 28 years ago.

Our old photograph shows the first Splashy Fen in 1990 when it was held over two days, with the original organisers saying the aim was ‘to have a really good time with a few musicians playing around campfires, joined by some truly passionate music lovers’.

They were surprised when instead of the anticipated attendance of 200, they attracted 1 200 people who camped under the stars and listened to artists such as Tony Cox, the Silver Creek Mountain Band, Plagal Cadence and Syd Kitchen.

This year, the organisers are expecting an estimated 8 000 crowd with more than 300 acts on a number of different stages. Our picture from last year’s event shows how this festival has grown.

The Independent on Saturday appeals to readers who have old pictures of Durban and other parts of the province to send them to us for consideration. If any readers are featured in the old picture, we will do our best to recreate the scene with them in it again.

Readers sending pictures digitally – images should be about 1MB – can address them, with the relevant information, to satmail@inl.co.za

If the pictures are in hard copy format, they can be posted to The Editor, Old Pictures, The Independent on Saturday, PO Box 47549, Greyville, 4023.
