A night of impromptu laughter

- Jem Atkins TANYA WATERWORTH tanya.waterworth@inl.co.za

IT’S all about “pass the funny” in the Whose Line? comedy show at the Gateway Hotel in uMhlanga for one night on March 1.

The popular show, based on the US television show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, will see local comedian Jem Atkins teaming up with East Coast Radio’s Darren Maule and Kerri Miller, as well as Mo Vawda and Glen Bidermann-Pam.

Atkins said the format of Whose Line?, where the fun is based on suggestions from the audience and a bunch of games, is one of the most difficult types of comedy.

“There’s no control, so it’s a case of saying to the audience: ‘Give me anything, and I’ll make it funny’. I don’t know whether that’s courage or just insanity, but at the end of the day, it’s about having fun.

“We did the first Whose Line? at the Corner Café in Glenwood a couple of years ago, and it was amazing the way people really resonated with it. We’ve done about 30 shows since then and they are always popular,” said Atkins.

The show will see each comedian take to the stage for about five minutes, before the Whose Line? interaction begins, with Maule hosting.

Atkins said the audience should “brace themselves for 90 minutes of completely made-up, off-the-cuff hilarity”.

The show starts at 8pm, tickets cost R120 through Computicket, or R150 at the door on the night.
