Found on a Durban beach, could these belong to you?

- TANYA WATERWORTH

A DIAMOND engagement ring, two wedding bands and a gold dress ring found at an uMhlanga beach are at the centre of a mystery of how they got there, with a search launched for the owners.

Durban resident Marianne Barnard was sitting on the grass area at Bronze Beach, slightly north of uMhlanga main beach, a couple of weeks ago, when she noticed something in the grass next to her towel.

“I thought it was a bit of metal and was about to throw it away, but when I looked more closely, I saw it was a thin wedding band.

“A few minutes later when I lay down again, I spotted another ring with a tiny diamond.

“I could see the two rings were obviously a set, an engagement ring and wedding band and I put them in my purse.

“Then when I was packing up, as I picked up my towel, I saw another wedding band and then a fourth ring which was like a plain gold dress ring. I could not believe it.

“I think they may all belong to the same person. The rings are all plain and simple, nothing fancy,” said Barnard.

After taking the rings home, she posted about her find on social media, but has not yet found the owner.

“I wonder if it was a holidaymaker who possibly took off the rings while putting on lotion and then they slipped off a towel?

“After putting this on my Facebook page, I did get feedback but not the right feedback, unfortunately.

“I had eight people send pictures of rings that were lost, but none of them matched the ones I picked up,” she said.

“I always feel it is the sentiment behind rings which is important.

“I nearly lost my diamond ring twice, so I know the feeling when you think you have lost something very precious to you,” she said, adding that she had also had calls from jewellers.

Because the rings can only be claimed through a correct description, Barnard has not published pictures of them.
