City’s water cut notice

LARGE sections of west Durban could be without water for up to 36 hours next week because of a shutdown of the Western Aqueduct system.

According to eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, the shutdown will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“The shutdown is to tie in a new steel main from the Cato Ridge reservoir into the aqueduct. The City is compelled to drain the aqueduct since the operation involves steel welding,” he said.

He said draining of the aqueduct would start at 6am on Tuesday.

“This will allow the site teams to commence work at 6pm that day. The duration of the shut down will be from 6am on Tuesday until 6pm on Wednesday,” Mayisela said.

He said the city would completely fill all affected reservoirs, but some could run dry, depending on demand during the period.

He said water tankers would be sent to service areas experiencing water outages during the shutdown period. These are the affected areas: Georgedale Reservoir:

Hammarsdale High Level Reservoir: Cliffdale and Mlaba village, Shongweni Reservoir: Shongweni and Ntshongwen. Zwelibomvu Reservoir: Zwelibomvu, Salem, Ofudu, Inwabi and Ngonyameni. Cato Ridge Reservoir: Cato Ridge, Ntukuso, Kwaximba, Assimang. Abattoir Reservoir: KwaXimba and Emadeleni. Alverstone Nek Res: Alverstone, Alverstone North, Summerveld.
