Stick shift Supra coming soon

- MOTORING STAFF

THE long-awaited manual version of the BMW-based Toyota GR Supra has finally been revealed, as part of a revised line-up that includes numerous subtle tweaks.

The good news, for those few who like to change gears themselves, is the manual version has been confirmed for South African introduction later this year, as previously reported.

“On local tarmac, the revised Supra model line-up will debut at The Festival of Motoring, taking place at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in August 2022,” Toyota Motors South Africa said. “Dealer ordering will open in May, with sales commencing in Q3. Both Auto and Manual 3.0T variants will be offered with pricing announced at launch timing.”

The newly available manual gearbox is available with the familiar turbocharged six-cylinder engine, which produces 285kW. The new manual transmission comes with an iMT system that matches the engine speed to the driver’s clutch and shift operations, and it automatically blips the throttle when shifting.

“Underlying the latest enhancements is a further-matured chassis for more-refined driving performance and notably a manual transmission - driven by strong customer demand and expectations,” Toyota said. “The manual transmission has been developed for the 3.0 models to complement the Supra's high-output engine and supremely capable chassis.”

The updated Toyota Supra range also benefits from improved steering and suspension. Shock absorber damping characteristics have been modified for improved roll balance and ride comfort, while modified stabiliser bushings aim to improve initial steering response.

Further to that, the chassis control systems (such as the AVS and Vehicle Stability Control) have been tweaked for improved controllability at the limits of adhesion, Toyota says.

Those purchasing the Supra can also look forward to newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels in Premium Titanium Dark Silver. The sportscar is being offered with new exterior colours too, including Dawn Blue Metallic, Volcanic Ash Gray Metallic and, on a limited number of RZ models, Avalanche White Metallic. This applies to international models however. Local specifics will be announced at launch. The revised Supra is also available with a tan interior for the first time, and while we’re on the subject of cabin enhancements there’s a newly revised JBL Premium Sound system, although with that straight six BMW engine bellowing in all its glory, you might never want to use it.
