THE Porsche 911 is the most eyecatching car in the world, according to a study by Auto Trader UK that tracked the eye movements of 32 respondents. Although the sample size was admittedly small, the study did use intelligent software to track eye movements to show the time it took to fixate on each car image and the average time spent looking at each image.

The 911 sports car achieved the highest overall score of 91% and in its ‘luxury’ category it was followed by the Lexus LC500 and Ferrari F40, while the ‘everyday’ category was led by the BMW 3 Series.

The electric car segment saw the Porsche Taycan scoop top honours ahead of the Tesla Model 3.

Shake-up

THE governing FIA shook up its Formula One structure recently with Steve Nielsen joining from the commercial rights holder as sporting director. The restructuring follows a review ordered by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and will be in place for the season starting in March.

Nielsen joins after five years at Liberty Media-owned Formula One Group, where he reported to recentlyretired motorsport managing director Ross Brawn. CEO Stefano Domenicali said he supported the move, adding: “His skills and experience in Formula One will assist the FIA in its ongoing efforts to improve their operations during race weekends.” |

RENAULT Sport is about to make way for an electrified future under the Alpine banner, but not before the performance brand’s hot hatches get a last hurrah. Sporting subtle revisions, the 2023 Renault Megane RS Trophy has been launched in SA, at a somewhat eye-watering price of R899 900.

The last petrol-powered performance hatch from the French carmaker will be the Megane RS Ultime, sporting unique design touches. Power comes from the familiar 1.8-litre turbopetrol engine that pounds out 221kW and 420Nm, and it’s paired exclusively with Renault’s six-speed automated dual-clutch gearbox.
