Sisulu’s life to be honoured, celebrated
A WEEKEND of mourning for Struggle icon Albertina Sisulu is about to spill into a week filled with activities honouring her life.
ANC stalwarts and South Africa’s political heavyweights have spent the last two days reminiscing about Sisulu’s life. Her house in Joburg has been a hive of activity with almost every important politician, including President Jacob Zuma and Winnie Madikizeladropping by to give the family their condolences.
So many people have just driven up and dropped off bunches of flowers, that family have started to pile them outside the house for extra space. The Sisulu family is handling the pressure well, even feeding the media who have barely left their front lawn since Friday night. It will be a long week for them.
Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane announced plans for the coming week of mourning yesterday. The ANC will be holding at least four memorial services before the category one funeral at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
Her son Mlungisi Sisulu said the family had chosen to hold the funeral in Soweto because it is where “we really broke the back of apartheid” and his parents lived in Soweto for 60 years and considered it home.
