‘Corrupt’ officers arrested

THREE traffic officials were arrested at Eshowe at the weekend during an undercover operation to expose corruption in the Transport Department.

The department, along with the Hawks, set up the operation to expose traffic officials suspected of accepting bribes.

Transport Department spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said the men were arrested while they were on duty on Friday afternoon.

“They had been accused of accepting bribes from speeding motorists and were found in possession of R1 600 in cash,” he said.

The officials were apprehended after accepting a bribe from an undercover officer, Ncalane said.

He said the department was planning to take the operation into other areas of the province and to arrest more corrupt officers.

Last month, two traffic officials were arrested in similar circumstances in Estcourt. Ncalane said that the officials arrested on Friday were expected to appear in court soon.
