Miner dies after water-jetting injury

Northam Platinum suspended water jet cleaning operations at its Zondereinde division in Limpopo in late May after an employee, who died on Friday, was injured. “Subsequent to the accident, water-jetting in development areas at the mine has stopped while the investigation takes place,” Northam spokeswoman Charmane Russell said. “The name of the employee who died will be withheld until next of kin have been informed,” she said. Lesiba Seshoka, the spokesman for the National Union of Mineworkers, said the death was “very sad”. “We are actually very disappointed by that, because clearly the number of mineworkers losing their lives are continuing to rise. Up to the end of May, 53 workers have lost their lives,” Seshoka said. Northam shares closed 0.7 percent lower at R44.20 on Friday. – Sapa
