Fawu starts fish factory strike

About 6 000 Food and Allied Workers’ Union members in the pelagic fishing sector began a strike at plants on the West Coast, in Gansbaai and Hout Bay on Friday. Spokeswoman Dominique Swartz said this came after negotiations over the demand for a relief fund for seasonal workers failed to produce results. The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration hosted talks between the union and Premier Fishing, Oceana, Gansbaai Marine, Suid-Oranje, Saldanha Group and Marine Products. – Sapa
