Sappi eyes pulp production rise

Sappi was planning to invest more in pulp production as its paper business remained under pressure from soft demand and rising costs, its chief executive, Ralph Boettger, said last week. The paper industry has struggled to emerge from a decade-long slump caused by soft demand and overcapacity, exacerbated by the 2009 recession. Demand has started to recover but the upturn has been uneven. Boettger said the paper business was not as profitable as it should be, especially in Europe, and the company would now focus on growing its pulp and chemical cellulose businesses. – Reuters
