BARCELONA: Cameron van der Burgh claimed gold and a championsh­ip record on the final day of the Mare Nostrum Barcelona swim meet yesterday. The South African Olympian broke James Gibson’s 2003 Championsh­ips record of 27.71sec in the 50m breaststro­ke when he raced to the finish line in a phenomenal time of 27.56sec ahead of Norway’s Alexander Dale Oen in 28.04 and Romania’s Dragos Agache in 28.16. The South African swimming team will now be heading for Canet in France to compete in the Mare Nostrum leg on June 8-9. – Sports Correspond­ent
