Price you’ll pay for your sins

Smokers will cough up 58c extra per pack: that’s 5 to 8% more.

Tax is up 20% on a 750ml bottle of spirits, 10% on beer, 8.84c on ciders and alcoholic fruit drinks, and 8% on wine.

Petrol, power levies rise

Fuel levy up by 20c/litre. Road Accident Fund up by 8c/litre. Electricit­y levy up by 1c/kwh. Plane, helicopter purchase (under 5 000kg) – ad valorem duty of 7%.

Duty of 10% for boats from 10m.

Pensioners get R60 more

State old-age pension, disability and care dependency grants up by R60 a month to R1 200; R1 220 for pensioners over 75.

Foster care grants rise by R30 to R770; child support grants to R280.

E-toll fees cut, state to pay

Freeway toll fees slashed; National Treasury pays R5.8bn debt incurred.

Cars with e-tags pay 30c/km; trucks 75c, R1.51/km; motorbikes 20c/km.

Drivers’ monthly tolls capped at R550; 15% off after fees reach R400.

Higher capital gains tax

Capital gains tax (CGT) is set to rise dramatical­ly after more than a decade of unchanged rates, with the effective maximum CGT rate increasing to 13.3% from 10%.

Boost for job creation

Expanded public works gets an extra R4.8bn bringing it to R77.8bn.

The community work programme gets an extra R3.5bn to R6.2bn while Working for Water and Working on Fire gets an extra R1.1bn to R7.7bn.

Education given a push

Up from R207bn to R236bn. R152bn for basic education. Tertiary education up by 13.9% to R31.3bn.

Vocational, continuing education training up by 5.6% to R14.4bn.

R845bn for infrastruc­ture

Boost of R845bn for infrastruc­ture plans over the next 3 years.

Investment in municipal infrastruc­ture and human settlement­s to rise from R120bn in 2012/13 to R139bn in 2014/15.

Health gets huge injection

R121.9bn allocated to health – an extra R12.3bn for the next 3 years.

R6bn more to fund national health insurance in 2014/15.

R968m extra over 3 years for ARV treatment at CD4 threshold of 350.

Energy spend powers up

R4.7bn for 1 million solar-water geysers; municipali­ties get R600m for low-energy lighting; R300m for electrifyi­ng informal settlement­s.
