All eyes on Ready To Run Sale

- DAVID THISELTON

HE 2012 Emperor’s Palace Ready To Run Sale catalogue looks to be full of quality with KwaZuluNatal’s top sire Kahal well represented with 26 lots.

The likes of the late Champion Sire Jet Master and other high profile South African sires like Western Winter, Fort Wood, Captain Al, Trippi, Var, Silvano, Dynasty, National Assembly, National Emblem, Mogok, Muhtafal, Toreador, Tiger Ridge, Right Approach and Windrush are also represented.

It also features plenty of top class Australian-bred progeny with sires of the quality of Fastnet Rock, Encosta Delago, Rock Of Gibraltar, Danehill Dancer, Flying Spur, Henrythenavigator, Hussonet, Authorized, Astronomer Royal, Stratum and Teofilo.

The two Jet Masters on sale will attract tremendous interest as they are both well related.

Lot 31, a Jet Master colt, is a halfbrother to Ivory Trail who famously downed the great Pocket Power in the Grade 1 Champions Cup at Clairwood in 2009. Jet Master filly Mystical Star (lot 47) is a full-sister to Daily News 2000 third-placed Lizarre, who is still campaigning successfully in Singapore.

The Klawervlei-bred Trippi colt, Foxtrip (lot 70), will attract plenty of interest as he is a half-brother to the dual Grade 3 and Listed winner, Trinity House, who should have more to come for her trainer Joey Ramsden this season.

Sale, Tulbagh Trip (lot 111), is a full-brother to the promising Charles Lairdtrained Yellow Card who won two of her five starts as a two-year-old last season.

One of the Vars on the Sale, the bay colt Variety Romp (lot 94), is a halfbrother to the impressive Listed Darley Arabian winner Jet Jamboree (Jet Master).

Variety Romp’s second dam is the SA Oaks winner Rootin’ Tootin’ and with the likes of Grade 1 winner Love Is In The Air as well as Careful Landing and Silver Flyer in the family, there could well be classic potential in this horse.

The other Var on the Sale, a chestnut colt called Stormy Duel (lot 117), is out of a half-sister to the Grade 1 Canon Gold Cup winner Thundering Star, while the third dam is the great seven-times Grade 1 winner Olympic Duel who was trained by Terrance Millard.

Both Variety Romp and Stormy Duel are being prepared at Marc and Nicola Coppez’s pre-training facility Balmoral Stud, and in a recent visit Racegoer paid to this farm, all of their Ready To Run horses were looking in fine condition.

The only Western Winter on the Sale, a bay colt, is also being prepared at Balmoral Stud.

He is out of an Australian-bred mare who is a full-sister to Headturner, who was the top rated three-year-old in Australia in 2005/2006.

The Rock Of Gibraltar colt, Magestique (lot 54), will attract interest as he is from the family of Australia’s new boom sire Fastnet Rock, a champion three-year-old colt and champion sprinter who has already sired ten Group/Grade 1 winners.

The only progeny of Fastnet Rock himself that appears on the sale, a bay colt, is beautifully bred being out of a Sadler’s Wells mare and being a halfbrother to a dual Group 1 winner who won the Italian Derby.

Furthermore, his second dam, who is out of a dam by the top European sire and broodmare sire Habitat, was a champion three-year-old filly in Europe and champion two-year-old filly in Ireland.

One of the Captain Al’s, the bay colt Francois P (lot 17), is from the family of Horse Chestnut while the other, the bay colt Captain’s Pleasure (lot 175), is from the family of champion twoyearfilly Prairie Oyster.

One of the Kahals on offer, a bay filly called Pick Of The Field (lot 181), is a half-sister to Grade 1 Gommagomma Challenge winner Pick Six.

Another of the Kahals, a bay colt called The Gobi (lot 22), is a half-brother to Grade 3 winner and Grade 1 placed Extra Xero, while another, a bay filly called Isthandosami (lot 82), is a half-sister to Listed winner Fakazi, who finished third in the Ready To Run Cup, and a full-sister to the recent Grade 1 Premier’s Champion Stakes third-placed Love Struck. Kahal also has a bay filly, Rite Of Spring (lot 112), who is a full-sister to Grade 2 Fillies Nursery winner, Spring Clover

Some magnificent horses have graduated from The Ready To Run Sale, including the Equus Horse Of The Year Igugu, who won both the Vodacom Durban July and J&B Met among other Grade 1s, the Grade 1 SA Classic winner and SA Derby and July runner up, Pierre Jourdan, as well as Imbongi, who was the leading earner of his year at the Dubai Racing Festival and who also tasted Group race glory in the UK.

The Ready To Run Sale will take place over two days at the TBA complex at Gosforth Park, Friday November 2 and Sunday November 4, with the breeze-up gallops being held at Turffontein on October 17 and at Summerhill on October 19.
