Licences for beach driving could work
IT IS obvious that Ezemvelo will soon, of necessity, be exploring new revenue streams to cover the substantial gap between government funding and expenditure (“Funding shock for Ezemvelo Wildlife”, The Mercury, September 28).
With a potential financial crisis staring Ezemvelo in the face, it may be wise to consider the financial boost to the body’s coffers were they to institute a rigidly controlled beach driving permit system.
This has been a hot topic, but a “win-win” solution would be for Ezemvelo to consider issuing 1 000 annual vehicle permits for certain beaches, with limited and controlled access, at R2 000 each.
People applying for beach vehicle permits should be members of a recognised marine sporting body which can self-regulate its members.
Access should be conditional to each vehicle displaying an authorisation decal.
