AmaZulu in buoyant mood

- Kamlesh Gosai

IT’S rare that AmaZulu are near the top end of the standings, so they are looking forward to making it a lengthy stay when they host SuperSport United in a showdown at the Moses Mabhida Stadium tomorrow.

After five matches the Durban side have 10 points, along with log leaders SuperSport and Moroka Swallows, but occupy third spot because of a lower goal difference.

Since the first round when they were fortunate to beat Orlando Pirates away, the ball has mostly rolled for the Durban side, and they want to make the most of the opportunities that come along.

“It’s easy to go top, but to maintain that position is harder,” said AmaZulu defender Carlington Nyadombo.

“We are looking forward to whatever SuperSport bring. Whatever approach or tactics they come with, we will be ready to face them.

Belief

“If we can win this game and go top it can bring the belief back for the fans, because we are doing something we haven’t done for such a long time.”

Were it not for a surprise optional-time blunder by goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini in gifting Wits an equaliser in their midweek 1-1 draw, Usuthu would have been two points clear at the summit.

In seasons gone by such a mistake away from home might have spelt defeat. This time, AmaZulu still banked a point. It’s a sign of things going right for a change.

Captain Kapini had been forgiven and the squad had agreed to look forward, said Nyadombo.

“Mistakes do happen, and the only ones who can help you in such situations are your mates. As a defender it’s a bit easier because you have other defenders with you, but the goalkeeper is alone.

“We tried our best to talk to him and help bring his confidence back. And a point away from home was not a bad result,” said the Zimbabwe international.
