Rihanna rocking the celebrity design scene

- Billy Suter

Contestants in the US version of a series in which fashion designers create new looks for celebrities. Executive produced by pop star Rihanna, the show is scheduled to premiere on DStv’s Vuzu Amp at 8.30pm tomorrow. POP princess Rihanna attracted many DStv viewers in March last year with her Styled to Rock series, focusing on London designers creating fresh looks for celebs, including Kanye West, Cheryl Cole, Katy Perry, The Saturdays, The Scissor Sisters, Pixie Lott, Rizzle Kicks, Tinchy Stryder, Little Mix and Little Boots.

The winner of the show went on to create an outfit for a Hyde Park concert performance by the beauty from Barbados, whose many hits include Pon the Replay, SOS, Don’t Stop the Music, Diamonds, Rude Boy, Umbrella and Where Have You Been?.

Now the American version of the show is headed for DStv, scheduled to start on the Vuzu Amp channel at 8.30pm tomorrow.

The series, again executive produced by Rihanna, has designers competing to create the best outfit for one or more famous music acts every week.

Restricted in time and materials, their designs are judged and the music act of the week chooses his or her favourite outfit. One designer is eliminated each week.

The US version of the show will feature celebrity guests such as Kid Cudi, Miley Cyrus, Carly Rae Jepsen, Khloé Kardashian, Kylie Minogue, Kelly Osbourne, The Band Perry, Naya Rivera, Big Sean, Nervo and Ne-Yo.

US singer and fashion designer Pharrell Williams serves as one of the mentors on the series, along with American model Erin Wasson and Rihanna’s stylist, Mel Ottenberg.

Each week, designers will be presented with a different challenge, each aimed at creating a new look to define a celebrity guest’s image, and in turn battle it out in the sewing room.

However, only half of the contestants selected by the mentors will get to showcase their new design for the client and have a shot at winning. The other half will be up for elimination.

The grand prize is $100 000, a fashion feature in Glamour magazine and the chance to become the next member of Rihanna’s design team.
