Flabba’s emotional funeral

- Lerato Mbangeni

AT THE funeral of Nkululeko Habedi, aka Flabba, fans got a chance yesterday to hear about the person the star was from his family and friends.

Yesterday morning, gathered at Alexandra Stadium, everyone heard about how generous, loving and kind the Skwatta Kamp rapper was.

Neighbour Tiny Bopape choked back tears and said: “Nkuli was like my son. I don’t know what to say. Who’s going to tease me now? Every time he saw me, he’d shout a greeting. Even when he needed a fork, he’d come to me and he was always full of jokes.”

Singer Kabomo Vilakazi, who worked on musical projects with Habedi and toured with him, said: “His family did an amazing job raising an incredible man. I swear he was the most generous person I know. The most loving person I know. If Nkuli had R100 and you were hungry, he’d give you the whole R100 and go hungry himself.”

He added that Habedi was an example of what a man should be and followed his speech by performing Thandiswa Mazwai’s Nizalwa Ngobani.

Habedi’s uncle Themba told of what a good cook he was.

“He loved us, his family. I have a big belly right now because he used to cook for me and he was great at cooking. I loved him and will miss him,” he said, rubbing his belly.

Fellow Skwatta Kamp members also shared anecdotes about their slain friend.

Infa said: “Thank you for your friendship, your honesty, for always showing up when I needed you. For always picking up the phone and checking up on a brother.”

Bozza also recalled his friend’s love for food, saying Habedi was so serious about eating he would take off his Tshirt.

After leaving the podium, Bozza was overwhelmed and had to be helped off the field by other members of the group.

Other speakers included Joburg mayor Parks Tau and local poet Mzwakhe Mbuli who recited a poem he wrote for Habedi.

Flabba was laid to rest at the Westpark Cemetery.
