Man rescued after fall during Berg hike

- Mercury Reporter

A 75-YEAR-old man was rescued in the Monk’s Cowl area in the Drakensberg after he slipped and fell at the weekend.

KZN Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert McKenzie said the man was hiking with others in the area on Saturday afternoon.

“He was walking on the path when it is believed that he slipped and fell, and tumbled about 15m-30m down a slope. He was injured and unable to walk,” he said.

McKenzie said fellow hikers raised the alarm. Two paramedics from EMS’s Bergville base and members of the Mountain Club of South Africa helped the injured man.

McKenzie said when the rescue party reached him, the man was in a stable condition and well cared for as there was a doctor among the hikers and some others were also medically qualified.

“They placed the patient on a specialised rescue stretcher and prepared a landing zone for the helicopter,” he said.

McKenzie said they had to carry the patient and stretcher to an area where the helicopter could land safely.

He was taken to St Anne’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

Hospital spokeswoman Shubnum Ismail said the man was examined and treated for minor injuries.

“After being treated he was sent home – he did not stay overnight,” she said. LONDON: A video has emerged that appears to show Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney being knocked out by his former teammate Phil Bardsley in Rooney’s Cheshire kitchen.

The Sun on Sunday clip claims to show the England captain collapsed on the floor after Bardsley delivered a blow to his face in what appears to have started as a play session between two friends.

Rooney has spoken of his love for boxing in the past. The 29-year-old is friends with Manchester fighter Anthony Crolla and super-middleweight fighter Paul Smith of Liverpool.

He once also carried former champion Ricky Hatton’s belt into the ring before his fight against Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas eight years ago.

Rooney started boxing when he was in the youth team at Everton and revealed last November he would have considered taking it up professionally if he had not made it as a footballer.

In 2008, Rooney said: “I was doing both boxing and football training at one stage when I was about 15.”

In the video, the two men exchange several punches and grapple before Bardsley hits Rooney with a left-hand jab. Rooney falls backwards and does not move until the footage ends. – The Independent
