Classic SA play for St Anne’s

- Billy Suter

ACTORS Mpilo Nzimande and TQ Zondi, from the hit stage productions Horn of Sorrow and Woza Albert!, will feature in a classic piece of South African theatre to be presented at The Theatre – St Anne’s College, in Hilton, next week.

The play, directed by Peter Mitchell, is the Hexagon Theatre production of The Island, a work by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona.

It will be presented at 7.30pm next Wednesday. Tickets (R50) are available from lchemaly@stannes.co.za or by phoning 033 343 6100 from next Tuesday.

The Island revolves around John and Winston, two prisoners on Robben Island, bound by ideology, proximity, shackles and a deep affection.

As they rehearse for a performance of Sophocles’s Antigone at the prison concert, John learns that his release is imminent; Winston is a lifer.

This classic South African play balances hope and despair as it identifies with Antigone’s struggle of right and wrong, the law of the State versus the law of the heart.

It exposes the depths of cruelty and inhumanity, while also affirming the dignity and courage of the human spirit.

The Island is remembered as one of the few plays that helped to change the world.

Its tour of America was crucial in bringing the Americans to impose sanctions on South Africa, a move which helped to topple apartheid.

Still talking local theatre with punch... note that award-winning Durban actor Mthokozisi Zulu and television actress Thuso Mbedu have pooled talents for a new stage drama about crime and the abuse of women.

The Crook’s Eye was written and directed by Zulu, who won a 2014 Mercury Durban Theatre Award for his supporting role in the hit comedy, Super Mokoena.

Zulu, who was also among the cast of the recent, wellreceived ’ Mashu the Musical at Durban’s Playhouse, also stars in The Crook’s Eye, alongside Mbedu, who plays Kitso in e.tv’s Scandal.

The Crook’s Eye has performances at Durban’s Catalina Theatre, Wilson’s Wharf, at 7pm this Friday and Saturday, and also at noon on Sunday. Tickets cost R100.
