Join the chamber, urges Ndlovu

- Colleen Dardagan

DURBAN businesses which stayed outside the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry were putting the success of their operations at risk.

Zeph Ndlovu, general manager of KZN operations at Transnet Port Terminals and now the chamber’s newest president, warned that Durban businesses which were committed to increasing the region’s economy could not afford to remain outside of the chamber movement.

“We are the voice of business. We have 2 800 members. We are linked to so many government initiatives. We have been at the forefront of informing policymakers on which way the economy should go.

“We want members to come closer and hold each other’s hands so we can drive the multipliers in the economy. The high level of our networking value means businesses in this city cannot afford not to be members of the chamber,” he said.

Ndlovu said he would use his two-year tenure to profile small businesses in the townships.

“I am looking forward to growing small business operating in the townships. We need to put them on the road to being industrialists and exporters.”

Having served in the Durban chamber as a member of the board for four years, as well as on the tourism and small business committees, before taking up the leadership position this month, Ndlovu has served presidents.

“I have worked to understand the direction of the chamber. To ensure that the institutional memory is there.”

He said his position at Transnet meant he was perfectly positioned to bring the government and the private sector together to increase exports and manufacturing and to promote the industrialisation of the economy in the region.

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry will hold its annual dinner at Durban’s International Convention Centre tomorrow night.
