Local wins stage 4

LA SPEZIA: Home favourite Davide Formolo claimed the first victory of his short professional career with a stunning ride into La Spezia on the fourth stage of the Giro d’Italia yesterday. The 22-year-old was roared into the port city after a wildly unpredictable 150km stage in which Simon Clarke took over the maglia rosa from Orica GreenEdge teammate Michael Matthews. Clarke leads by 10 seconds from teammate Esteban Chaves, with race favourite Alberto Contador a further seven seconds back. – Reuters

Back on his bike

LE MANS: Honda MotoGP rider Dani Pedrosa will be back in action at the French Grand Prix this weekend after missing three of the season’s first four races due to arm surgery. Pedrosa, 29, had been replaced by Japanese stand-in Hiroshi Aoyama in the US, Argentinian and Spanish rounds as teammate to double world champion Marc Marquez. Pedrosa has suffered from a problem common among motorcycle racers, when pressure builds up in the forearm and causes intense pain, making riding a bike difficult when the muscle becomes too big for the “sack” that it sits in. – Reuters Shunned cricketer Kevin Pietersen, top, and ECB director of cricket Andrew Strauss have a checkered history.
