In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded. – Author Terry Pratchett (1948-2015)

ERRORS I have seen – often executed in good faith and sometimes in naiveté – that parents of adults commit:

Trusting the estate, leaving a house and possessions, to the firstborn – or to the “most responsible” or to the lawyer in the family – in the belief that he or she will do the “right and honourable thing” with the death of the parent.

More than a dozen times I have seen the older trusted son or daughter, or the one who is “good with money”, rip off grieving siblings and do so in the full belief that he or she was in fact doing the right thing.

Leaving more of an estate to the son or daughter who may need it more, and leaving less of an estate, or even nothing, to the son or daughter who may have married well or landed a great job or is wealthy already.

Refusing to or failing to prepare a will at all.

Settling a score in dying, an issue that could not be settled while living – getting back, teaching a lesson, showing who’s really boss – from the grave.

Believing a “new” spouse will do the “right and honorable thing” with offspring from a former marriage.

Please, if you do not have a will, one that is tight, kind, and fair, get one today.
