Museum dates for Qadasi and band
DAVID Jenkins, also known as Qadasi, an accomplished maskandi musician who developed a deep passion for Zulu culture and music while growing up in Empangeni, is to perform at the Luthuli Museum in Groutville at 6pm on Friday.
Admission to the gig at the museum, at 3233 Nokukhanya Luthuli Street, is R20.
Qadasi will be at the venue for two performances with a full band, the first performance being earlier on Friday for an audience of school pupils.
Lined up to perform with him are guitarist Maqhinga Radebe, bassist Sandile Dlamini, keyboardist Malungi Msomi and drummer Gcina Khumalo.
Now based in Durban, Qadasi is following his dream of being a professional maskandi musician and is proud to have been nominated for a South African Music Award (Sama) and twice for a South African Traditional Music Achievement Award (Satma).
With the release of his latest album, Uhambo Olusha (A New Journey), his quest to revive traditional maskandi music is well under way.
Over the past couple of years, Qadasi has been the opening act for Johnny Clegg, appeared at the FNB Stadium for the first annual Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day, and enjoyed a brief tour in Ireland. He also enjoyed performances alongside Ladysmith Black Mambazo in Amambazo – The Musical.
Qadasi records under the independent label, Sande Entertainment, headed by Sibongiseni Shabalala of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Friday’s concert is supported by Concerts SA and has been produced by iSupport Music Business and the Luthuli Museum. – Goodlife Reporter
