Contador extends lead

FORLI: Alberto Contador held on to the overall lead and gained time on rival Richie Porte yesterday on the almost entirely flat 200km 10th stage of the Giro d’Italia from Civitanova Marche to Forli, along the Adriatic coast. Italian rider Nicola Boem won the stage after getting into an early breakaway. Porte had to change a punctured tyre and dropped behind the main pack in the final kilometres, losing 47 seconds to the general classifica­tion leaders. He dropped from third to fourth overall, 1min 09sec behind Contador. – AP

Banyana star retires

BANYANA Banyana striker Portia Modise announced her retirement from profession­al football yesterday. The 31year-old, who made her debut for the national team in 2000, has scored 102 goals in her 117 appearance­s for Banyana. Modise has played club football abroad in Denmark. – ANA

Wembley says ‘sorry’

LONDON: Wembley Stadium apologised to Middlesbro­ugh for spelling the club’s name wrong on tickets for next week’s Championsh­ip play-off final. The mistake, in which the name was incorrectl­y spelt “Middlesbor­ough”, did not deter fans who snapped up all 38 000 available tickets to watch their team try to reach the Premier League for the first time since 2009. – Reuters

Ramsey signs till 2018

LONDON: Chris Ramsey was named as head coach of relegated Queens Park Rangers yesterday despite failing to turn around the club’s fortunes since taking over on a temporary basis in February. The London club, which suffered a second relegation from the Premier League in three seasons after a disappoint­ing campaign, said Ramsey had agreed to a contract until 2018. – Reuters
