Ford set to launch next-gen Figo
Figo to target rivals such as Etios, VW Polo Vivo and Sandero
FORD has announced that the new-generation Figo will be launched in South Africa in the fourth quarter of this year, and will be sold in both hatchback and sedan derivatives.
To be known as the Ka in Europe, it will retain the Figo name in South Africa where it will continue to be pitched below the Fiesta as Ford’s competitor in the sub B-segment against rivals like the Toyota Etios, Renault Sandero and VW Polo Vivo.
The first Figo, which was based on the previous-generation Fiesta, made its South African debut in 2010 and has gone on to be a popular seller with around a 15% share of its segment. The new version will have improved styling along with smart technologies and high levels of safety whilst retaining an affordable pricetag.
A more modern new design sees the Figo adopting the Ford family trepezoidal grill along with bold elongated headlamps and a raked bonnet, with the hatch getting a sporty spoiler.
The interior is also completely new, with improved finishes and attention to detail, in a more modern and welcoming cabin that offers more space and improved safety
For the first time the Figo will be available in two body styles, comprising the familiar five-door hatchback as well as a new four-door sedan.
The compact Ford also gets a dose of hightech with features (depending on derivative) like a new device-docking station with Bluetooth and Voice Activation, a programmable MyKey function, as well as electronic automatic temperature control.
Full technical details will be made known closer to launch but Ford confirms that both petrol and diesel models will be offered along with a choice of manual or auto transmissions.
It’s safe to speculate that Ford’s award-winning three-cylinder 1-litre turbo EcoBoost engine will find its way into the range.
Standard safety will include ABS brakes and a minimum of dual front airbags across the range, with higher derivatives offered with side airbags and an Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Hill Launch Assist.
