US fire tolls mount

MIDDLETOWN: A runaway fire burnt largely unchecked yesterday after incinerating 400 homes and other buildings north of California’s Napa Valley, leaving at least one person dead. A second blaze, about 300km away, destroyed 135 homes. The fires had displaced 23 000 people, emergency services said. – AP
