New top-notch hospital launched in the Midlands

- Peta Lee

THE opening of the new 94-bed Life Hilton Private Hospital was long overdue as the scarcity of hospital beds had long been felt in the area.

Hundreds of guests attended the opening last week. With five operating theatres and more than 40 associated resident specialists, there’s no doubt the hospital will have a huge impact on the Midlands’ access to quality, private health-care services.

André Meyer, chief executive for the Life Healthcare Group, and developers Andre Voigts and Protus Sokhela identified the need for a hospital in the area in 2013, and went on to invite the Life Healthcare Group to partner them in the massive project.

The hospital will also offer a six-bed intensive care unit, a six-bed high care unit, and a five-bed neonatal intensive care unit, as well as maternity and paediatric units, a 24-hour emergency and accident unit, eight-station renal dialysis unit, and a radiology unit with CT and MRI scanners as well as X-ray facilities.

Next year, the opening of a hi-tech oncology facility is expected, backed by the support of 11 oncologists.

Indren Poovan, project manager of the hospital and also hospital manager, said it had been a challenging time since their first site meeting in April 2014, but along the way, those involved had never lost sight of the detail.

We’ve dealt with and overcome hailstorms, rain, frost, clay-based soil, taxi and metalwork strikes, and created a place of care.” He thanked everyone involved, including the Hilton community, “for accepting and embracing us”

The facility has energy-efficient LED lighting with motion sensors, which use considerably less electrical energy and reduce the heat load in the building; and heat pumps with heat recovery from the air-conditioning units provide hot water, resulting in only a quarter of the electricity demand being required, compared to traditional element-based hot water systems.
