Site inspection yields positive results
THE National Home Builders Registration Council had a site inspection of the Cornubia lowcost housing project north of Durban yesterday, and said that its involvement would guarantee people would receive quality buildings.
The council and a team of inspectors ran a series of inspections in different units.
Gary Olckers, the National Home Builders Registration Council’s (NHBRC’s) provincial manager, said their inspectors had personal digital assistant devices that they used during the inspections to report faults to the engineers on site.
He said during some of the inspections they had conducted, they had not been happy with the roof design, and it was changed.
Another problem had been the design of stairways and this was now being revised.
“Apart from this non-compliance, there has never been a major issue in terms of the design and the structures themselves. A lot of these designs come to us prior to them moving on to the site, our engineers will check the foundations and geotechnical reports before anyone starts construction,” he said.
When they were not happy with the design or work undertaken, the construction was done again or repairs effected, he said.
Although the National Home Builders Registration Council was happy with the progress of the project, it said there had been delays in administration rather than from the work on-site.
“So far, about 2 500 units have been completed. We had aimed to have 5 000 completed by this time,” said Olckers.
The completion deadline for the whole project was mid-2016.
