Punters look to ‘Exit’ in front

- RICHARD MCMILLAN

EXOTIC bet punters took a bit of a hiding at Greyville on Friday night and will be hoping to recoup some of their losses at the central Durban venue today where the poly surface will again be in use.

As a form studier one can’t help wondering just where some of the winners come from and when the betting gives no hint of potential improvement it makes things even more difficult.

Generally, form does stand up and while very few runners are stand-out potential bankers one can usually break things down to a few that have the better chances of making the frame.

That is the beauty of racing compared to other betting platforms such as casinos in that if you do your homework you have a fighting chance of success – skill and dedicated study compared to pure chance.

At Greyville today there are no stand-out bankers but there are a couple of runners that look to have good winning chances like the three-year-old Jay Peg colt Exit Here from the Charles Laird stable that has been brought on beautifully by his conditioner with progressive steps up in distance from 1 200m on debut to 1 400m and then a mile.

He was second in his first two starts where he was tried on the poly 1 200m on debut then to the Greyville turf over 1 400m.

Back on the poly over 1 400m he led all the way to win comfortably and last time over 1 600m on the same surface he raced handy then strode clear to an easy win.

Bringing a horse along like that is very much “old school” professionalism and the rewards have come.

Good draw

The colt clocked a good time of 95.62 secs without being pressured in that last race and from a good draw today he looks a good bet.

Sean Tarry runs Baracah and Gold Bank in the race and both have chances of lifting a share of the stake.

Gold Bank with Muzi Yeni in the irons is preferred from his inside draw and one cannot ignore the chances of the Alyson Weight-trained Western Winter gelding Mumsy’s Jet that has been a very consistent performer.
