Making Informed University and College Choices
THE WITS Business School Case Centre has won the soughtafter Emerald Emerging Markets Best Teaching Case award at this year’s Academy of Business (AIB) sub-Saharan conference.
The case study, titled Calum McCracken and NGN Telecoms: The Power of Perseverance was written by Amanda Bowen, Stephanie Townsend, Jose Barreira and Claire Beswick in 2014 and was selected out of a pool of 10 submissions from the African continent
The award is sponsored by Emerald Group, a global publisher that manages more than 290 journals and has been providing peer-reviewed research for 45 years.
Their Emerging Markets Case Studies series provides multimedia cases about organisations in emerging markets to tertiary institutions around the world.
Head of the WBS Case Centre, Claire Beswick said, “The case was a collaborative effort and we are all delighted that our work has been recognised with this award. It’s a great privilege to work with such a dynamic team.”
WBS is the only business school in South Africa to have a dedicated case centre. The aim is to bring real-world business challenges into the classroom for students to address, and create a context for discussing and analysing business processes to support traditional teaching methods.
Case writers work with academics to produce timely, relevant cases to current challenges facing business and society. The centre has developed more than 200 on companies as diverse as AngloGold, SABMiller, Nando’s, Discovery, Harley Davidson, Avis, Massmart and Capitec Bank. They cover all areas of business and management; including strategy, organisational design and development, entrepreneurship, internationalisation, operations management and human resources.
Steve Bluen, head of WBS says, “It is one of our differentiators as a tertiary education institution and has once again proved that we remain as the forefront of business research, both locally and internationally.”
The school also recently announced that Dr Reuel Khoza, former chairman of Nedbank Group Limited will serve as a Visiting Adjunct Professor from 1 August 2015 – 31 July 2018.
Dr Khoza holds Honours in Psychology from the University of the North (now University of Limpopo) and an MA in Marketing Management from the University of Lancaster (UK). He has an honorary doctorate of Law from Rhodes University.
The appointment is located in Wits Business School in the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management at the WBS’ campus in Parktown, Johannesburg.
Prof Steve Bluen, director and head of WBS says “Our curriculum is based on the technical, critical thinking and emotional intelligence skills that are going to be needed in 2020 and beyond to successfully do business in Africa. This, together with our values-based approach and strong emphasis on leadership and character excellence means that Dr Khoza is a perfect fit. ”
